Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

Gabriel McKay joined California Baptist in April 2026 as an inaugural member of coach Kyle Getter’s coaching staff. McKay is a former Division I student-athlete at Liberty University and comes to CBU after spending a season as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Kentucky. "Gabriel is a rising star in this business," said Getter. "He has an incredible gift for people, and his energy and drive are unmatched. He is an integral piece of our coaching staff. I am excited to welcome Gabriel and his fiancée, Abbie, to CBU." McKay began his coaching career in the 2025-26 season, studying under coach Mark Pope at Kentucky. In his one year with the Wildcats, Kentucky finished 22-14 overall and 10-8 in the SEC. The Wildcats won two games in the SEC Tournament and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, where they defeated Santa Clara in the first round. Kentucky averaged 80.5 PPG and outscored teams by 6.2 PPG in the 2025-26 season. They finished the season ranked No. 28 in the RPI and received votes in the final AP Poll. Before joining the Wildcats, McKay played for his father, Ritchie McKay, at Liberty. During his time with the Flames, McKay appeared in 86 games. He also played two seasons at Trevecca Nazarene, appearing in 45 games. As an athlete, McKay was a three-time NABC Honors Court selection, a two-time ASUN Academic Honor Roll honoree, and a CUSA Commissioner’s Honor Roll honoree as well. Pierre joined the Lancers after spending the 2025-26 season as the Assistant Coach/Defensive Coordinator for Furman University. In his one season with the Paladins, Furman finished 22-13, highlighted by a 76-61 victory over ETSU in the Southern Conference Championship Game. Furman earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, where they were eliminated in the First Round by eventual runner-up Connecticut. Furman held opponents to 70.8 PPG in the 2025-26 season while outscoring teams by 5.5 PPG. The Paladins posted a 5.1 round margin and outshot opponents by just under five percent per game. Before accepting his role with Furman, Pierre spent seven seasons on coach Ritchie McKay’s staff at Liberty University. Pierre’s time with the Flames is where he first crossed paths with Getter. The Flames went 177-58 during the seven seasons Pierre was on the bench. They won six regular-season conference titles and four conference tournament championships. The Flames featured a defense that ranked in the top 31 nationally in scoring defense in each of Pierre's final five seasons. His final season, the 2024-25 campaign, saw the Flames possess the No. 11 defense in Division I. In 2019, Liberty defeated Mississippi State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Sfera joins the Lancers with detailed experience at the Division I level, most recently as an assistant coach at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. "Vic is someone I worked closely with while we were assistants at Liberty," said Getter. "He possesses an incredible attention to detail, ability to cultivate relationships, and a strong ability to communicate. He is a tremendous addition to our coaching staff. I am excited to welcome Vic, his wife Rachel, and their sons Lucas and Clay to CBU." In Sfera’s one season in Nashville, Lipscomb finished 19-13, including a 12-6 mark in ASUN Conference action. The Bison averaged 79.7 PPG, an increase from the year before, and shot 46 percent from the field. Before joining the Lipscomb staff, Sfera spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Charlotte. During his time in Charlotte, the 49ers achieved their first top three finish since 2006 and tied program records with 13 conference victories and 13 home wins. The 49ers also achieved their first ranked victory since 2013, a 70-68 win against No. 17 Florida Atlantic. During the 2022-23 season, Charlotte won the program’s first postseason tournament title when the 49ers won the College Basketball Invitational in Daytona Beach, FL.
