Since Drake took the helm, Fresno State's women's outdoor track and field team has finished no lower than fifth in five Mountain West Outdoor Championships, a place the Bulldogs had only bettered four times since 2000. The 2024-25 season saw the Bulldog women take third at the outdoor championships for the second straight year, matching their best finish in program history. That season, Fresno State earned nine medals including three MW Champions, the most in a season since 2018. The 2025 season was capped by the program’s first-ever discus national champion as Cierra Jackson claimed the title with the NCAA meet record throw of 65.82m/215-11 on her first attempt at the Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Matthew McGee enters his second season as an assistant coach for 2025-26, overseeing the program's jumps and combined events. He came to the Central Valley with nearly 20 years of coaching experience. In his first season at Fresno State, he coached up two Mountain West Outdoor Champions in Ella Spaulding (heptathlon) and Liz Tarczy (high jump). Tarczy's jump of 1.83m/6-0 ties the second-highest jump in program history, and is the highest since 1990. Spaulding became the youngest Bulldog to win the MW heptathlon title in program history. McGee had a third MW Champion in Tarczy, who won the indoor title. Janae Heffernan and Tarczy advanced to the NCAA First Round, and Spaulding was an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Finals in McGee's first year. On the men’s side, Garrett Ostrinski took third in the decathlon at the Mountain West Championships, becoming the first Bulldog to medal in the event since joining the MW and just the second Bulldog on the men's team to medal at the MW Outdoor Championship since 2017. Prior to joining the staff at Fresno State, McGee spent the past three years at University of San Francisco where he oversaw the program’s sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws and combined events. His groups broke nine University records, had three NCAA qualifiers, the first in the program's history outside of the distance events.
