The Philip H. Bartels '71 Head Coach of Men's Swimming
After five successful years poolside for the Big Red as an assistant coach, former Cornell swimming great Wes Newman '09 was named The Philip H. Bartels '71 Head Coach of Men's Swimming in April 2015. He had returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's teams in July of 2009 and was promoted to Associate Head Coach in July of 2014. The Canadian Olympic Trials participant and NCAA qualifier rewrote the Big Red record book during his four-year varsity career, graduating as one of the school's most decorated swimmers. A three-time Eastern champion, Newman held five individual and four school relay records at the time of his graduation. He swam on five Eastern champion relay teams during his career as well. Newman qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200 free in 2007 and 2009 and finished in the top five at the 2008 Canadian Olympic Trials in two events. A two-year team captain and the winner of the 2008 Richie Moran Award at Cornell, he was voted the team's most valuable performer in each of his four seasons. He was elected to the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.
