The 2024-25 season marks the 11th for Head Coach Kemp Savage after serving as an assistant coach for the six seasons prior. In his first eight years at the helm, he has guided EMU to three fourth-place finishes and three third-place finishes at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships. Savage owns 17 years of experience of coaching and competing. The Chesapeake, Va. native arrived at EMU in 2008 following a stint at Old Dominion University. He has led the Eagles to the highest finishes in program history, finishing third at the CAA Championships in the 2016, 2018 and 2022 seasons. The 2021-22 season saw Savage lead the Eagles to a third overall finish at the CAA Championships. Additionally, the team tallied 26 points, the most ever for EMU at the championships since the program joined the conference in 2012. Members of the Eagles First Varsity Eight squad, Emma Boersen and Chloe Hinojosa, were named to the 2022 All-CAA team. Seven Green and White boats took home first place finishes during the 2021-22 campaign, including three First Varsity Eight squads, two Second Varsity Eight teams and two First Varsity Four groups. Furthermore, under Savage’s guidance, 40 rowers earned spots on the 2022 CAA Commissioner's Honor Roll. Even though the season was shortened to the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eastern Michigan still found success. Haley Dutton joins Eastern Michigan as a volunteer coach for the 2022-23 season. Dutton was five-year letterwinner at EMU, starting as a talent-transfer novice rower in 2016. As a graduate student athlete in 2019, she led the First Varsity Eight squad to a program-best third-place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship (CAA). Dutton was also a member of several boats who claimed program best finishes at noted regattas in 2019, such as the Head of the Grand and the Head of the Hooch. Additionally, the Wisconsin-native helped the Eagles to a program-best fifth-place finish as part of the Varsity Eight boat at the Head of the Charles on Oct. 19, 2019. In June 2021, Dutton was named a Colonial Athletic Association Leadership & Sport Excellence Award recipient. Dutton was also a three-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete honoree at EMU. She graduated from Eastern Michigan University in April 2022 with a master of science in orthotics and prosthetics. Dutton also earned her bachelor’s degree from EMU in exercise science with a minor in communication April 2020. A native of West Salem, Wis., Dutton was a four-time letterwinner in track and field, throwing discus and shotput at West Salem High School. She ranked second in school history in the discus throw and fourth in the shot-put throw. In addition to track, Dutton lettered four times in basketball, while competing in cross country, and football.

Lucie Roy enters her first academic year as an assistant coach as Head Coach Kemp Savage announced Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024. Roy comes to Eastern after spending the last two seasons as the Head Men's and Women's Rowing Coach at Adrian College. At the time of her hiring, Roy said. "I am thrilled to be joining the coaching staff at Eastern Michigan University. The program is heading in an exciting direction, the facilities are phenomenal, and the coaches are incredibly knowledgeable. It's a spectacular time to become an Eagle." At the time of her hiring, Savage said: "We are thrilled to welcome Lucie to EMU as an assistant coach. Her impressive track record at Adrian College, where she led both the men's and women's rowing teams to multiple medals, speaks volumes about her expertise and leadership. With her experience developing successful programs, Lucie is poised to make a significant impact here at Eastern. We are excited to see her contribute to our program's growth and success." Roy excelled as a rower at Michigan State University in her three years on the varsity squad, stroking the 1V4+ to a fourth-place effort at the B1G Championships in 2022, the Spartans' highest finish in an NCAA-qualifying event since 2017. Roy was a two-time B1G Distinguished Scholar and CRCA Scholar-Athlete (2021, 2022) and her Highest Honors at the 2022 Academic Excellence Gala. During her time as a Student-Athlete at MSU, Gottschalk competed in the varsity eight helping her team finish fourth in the Sunshine State Invitational (6:32.55), finished first in the final race at the Big Ten Invitational (6:36.733), second in the Dale England Cup (7:31.28), and second in IRA Sprints to earn a spot in the Grand Final against five ranked crews, finishing sixth in a time of 7:09.54. She also helped her team finish fifth in the varsity eight at Big Ten Championships (6:17.781) a length ahead of Ohio State in MSU's best finish at the Big Ten Championships since 2014. Gottschalk is from Utica, Mich., graduating from Michigan State University in May of 2025 with a degree in Advertising Management. She has ties with Head Coach Kemp Savage as he helped coach her to compete in the 2025 World University Games as the U.S. took bronze (6:48.46) in the 8+ boat.
