A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Patterson most recently served as the running backs coach at Oklahoma State, where he coached five backs to a combined 1,172 yards and six touchdowns. Prior to that, he was the associate head coach and wide receivers coach at Purdue in addition to coaching five seasons at Illinois, the first three coaching the tight ends before moving to running backs for the final two campaigns. During his lone season in Stillwater, Patterson coached five running backs that combined for 1,172 rushing yards and six touchdowns.
