Cavanaugh came to Ohio by way of Incarnate Word, where he served as the special teams coordinator from 2022-24. In 2025, Cavanaugh coached All-MAC First Team selectee Sieh Bangura. In his senior season, Bangura rushed for 1,243 yards, the sixth-best mark in Ohio program history. Notably, Bangura is just the fifth Bobcat in program history to log two 1,000-plus rushing yard seasons. Sophomore Duncan Brune was also a force to be reckoned with in 2025, logging 585 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns across 13 games. He recorded his first career 100-yard rushing game against NIU (Oct. 18). Under Cavanaugh, Ohio had the best rushing offense in the MAC with 2,956 total yards. As a special teams unit, Ohio led the MAC in average yards per punt return with 13.3 and ranked second in total kickoff yards with 4,162. Incarnate Word's 2024 special teams squad was ranked No. 2 among FCS teams by Hero Sports and No. 10 by Pro Focus Football (PFF). Notably, the 2022 squad led the Southland Conference in punt return averages and punt return touchdowns, finishing the season with three punt return touchdowns. Defensive Passing Game Coordinator / Cornerbacks Coach / Director of Player Development
Last Updated: Feb. 5, 2026 Twitter: @DLO614 De'Angelo Smith joined Ohio's coaching staff in 2017 as the cornerbacks coach. Since then, Smith has added director of player development to his title and in 2024, he assumed the responsibility of the passing game coordinator. Smith has mentored and developed a multitude of successful cornerbacks at Ohio. Most recently, graduate student Tank earned Third Team All-MAC accolades following the 2025 regular season. Following his performance in the 2022 season, redshirt freshman cornerback Torrie Cox, Jr. earned College Football News Freshman All-American Team Third Team accolades. On the season, Cox recorded 50 total tackles and was second in interceptions (2), both of which he snagged in the Bobcats' 33-14 victory over Western Michigan (Oct. 15, 2022). The 2024 season capped off another historic season for the Bobcats, marking the program's first 11-win season, sixth consecutive bowl victory and their first Mid-American Conference Championship win since 1968. In the MAC Championship against Miami (Ohio), Hauser's defense held the RedHawks to just three points, marking the first time a team hasn't scored a touchdown in the MAC Championship as well as the largest margin of victory (38-3). The 2023 defense played a crucial role in the team's 10-win season, finishing the season No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference and No. 4 in FBS football. Notably, the defense held Power 5 opponent to only seven points (Sept. 16), Western Michigan (Oct. 2

In 2025, Scott coached a handful of the conference's best defensive linemen, including Anas Luqman who tallied 34 tackles, including nine for a loss. Luqman led the Bobcats in quarterback hits with six while also registering four sacks. Scott played a large role in the 2024 defense, which finished at the top of the conference with multiple show-stopping performances. Ohio's defense held the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks to just three points in the 2024 MAC Championship, marking both the first time a team has not scored a touchdown and the largest win margin in the championship's history. They closed out the 2024 season on a high note, holding Jax State to 40 total rushing yards in the 2024 StaffDNA Cure Bowl. The 2023 season marked highs for the defense as well, with Ohio's defense hitting No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference and No. 4 in FBS football.
