Wide Receivers Coach/Offensive Pass Game Coordinator
Stutzmann joined San José State in 2024 as the Senior Offensive Analyst after two years at Utah Tech, where he was the Passing Game Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach last season and the Wide Receivers Coach in 2022. In January of 2025, Stutzmann was named wide receivers coach. In his first season as wide receivers coach, wide receiver Danny Scudero earned All-Mountain West First Team honors and was named a Biletnikoff Award Semifinalist, plus was named to numerous All-American second teams. Scudero finished the regular season leading the nation with 1,291 receiving yards and 107.6 yards per game—the fifth-highest single-season total in SJSU history. His 88 receptions rank third in program history, fourth nationally, and first in the Mountain West. Scudero also recorded 10 touchdowns, tied for the fifth-most in a single season at SJSU and 10th nationally. Wide receivers Kyri Shoels and Leland Smith were each named All-Mountain West Honorable Mention selections. Shoels concluded his first FBS season with 59 receptions for 768 yards and two touchdowns, ranking fourth in the conference in receptions and fifth in receiving yards. Smith posted career highs with 43 receptions for 688 yards and three touchdowns, finishing eighth in the Mountain West in receiving yards and 12th in receptions. Defensive Coordinator
Bojay Filimoeatu (BO-jay FEElee-moe-EE-ah-tu) returned to the San José State football staff for the 2024 season as inside linebackers coach/run game coordinator. In 2025, under his guidance, inside linebacker Jordan Pollard received First Team All-Mountain West honors for the second time in his career as he finished fourth in the conference and 21st in the nation in tackles with 108 and had 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, a fumble recovery, two forced fumbles, three pass breakups, and a pick-six. Pollard's career total of 353 tackles, which is good for ninth all-time in SJSU history, and in his final game against Fresno St. (11/29/25), Pollard had 19 tackles with a 58-yard pick six, plus a tackle for loss and forced fumble with Filimoeatu as the Interim Defensive Coordinator. In 2024, Pollard had 115 tackles, which was good for third in the conference and 25th in the nation. Pollard was named First Team All-Mountain West for the first time in his career. The Spartans' defense as a whole had 28 takeaways, the most in the Mountain West Conference and fifth in the country. He came from San Diego State, where he coached one season as the defensive line coach in 2023. Defensive Pass Game Coordinator/Cornerbacks Coach
Brian Norwood joined San José State in January of 2026 with over 35 years of experience as the Defensive Pass Game Coordinator & Cornerbacks Coach. Norwood spent the 2025 season at TCU as the Assistant Coach-Safeties for the Horned Frogs. He joined TCU after serving five seasons as assistant head coach/passing game coordinator/safeties coach at UCLA. Under Norwood’s guidance at UCLA, eight defensive backs earned All-Pac-12 honors, and in 2023, the Bruins led the Pac-12 and ranked 10th nationally in total defense, allowing just 301.5 yards per game. Norwood brings extensive experience, having served in co-defensive coordinator roles at Navy (2019), Kansas State (2018), and Tulsa (2015–17). During his season at Navy, the Midshipmen set a program record with 11 wins. At Kansas State, Norwood helped engineer one of the nation’s most dramatic defensive turnarounds, improving the Wildcats’ pass defense from last in the Big 12 to fourth in just one season. His résumé also includes a successful seven-year stint at Baylor (2008–14) as associate head coach and safeties coach, along with seven seasons at Penn State (2001–07) coaching safeties. Norwood’s career path also features stops at Texas Tech (2000), Navy (1995–99), Richmond (1992–94), and Arizona (1990–91). Safeties Coach
Joe Dale joins the Spartans in January of 2026 as the Safeties Coach after an eight-year tenure at Weber State, where he most recently served as the defensive coordinator. Dale was a primary architect of a Wildcats defense that captured four Big Sky titles and reached the FCS semifinals. A former standout safety at Utah, Dale was the 2007 Poinsettia Bowl MVP and part of the undefeated 2008 Sugar Bowl championship team. In December 2024, he was named the full Defensive Coordinator at Weber State. He spent the previous four seasons as the Co-Defensive Coordinator. He also coaches the Wildcat safeties. From 2021-24, Dale was the Co-Defensive Coordinator for the Wildcats and helped Weber State to one of the top defenses in the Big Sky Conference and FCS football. Dale joined the Weber State staff as an assistant coach in March 2018. During his time at Weber State, he has helped lead the Wildcats to three Big Sky titles and four trips to the FCS Playoffs, including the semifinals in 2019. Dale has helped coach the Wildcat defense, which has been one of the best in the country in several seasons. Weber State has been at or near the top of the Big Sky in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, and interceptions in multiple seasons.
