Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Richard Jones enters his second season as the Director of SIU Track & Field and Cross Country. Jones was an assistant coach with the Saluki track and field program prior to receiving the promotion. In his first season as a Saluki, Jones’ sprinters won six MVC titles, tallied 12 top-3 finishes at conference meets and totaled an impressive 14 top-eight finishes. While doing so, his sprinters broke five school records and tallied an additional six top-10 school marks. At the 2019 MVC Indoor Championships, Tyjuana Eason was the Saluki women’s top-point scorer and won three MVC titles, which included the program’s first-ever women’s 60m dash title. In doing so, she became just the 15th woman in MVC history to win both the 60m and 200m dashes at the same conference meet. At the 2019 MVC Outdoor Championships, Bri’Anna Branch became just the second individual in program history to nab MVC Most Outstanding Athlete honors after she won the 100m and 200m dashes and also helped SIU to a win in the 4x100 relay. Under Jones’ tutelage, Branch went on to clock the first sub-23 second 200m in school history at 22.74 and became the first Saluki women's sprinter since 1986 to qualify for the national meet in the 200m dash. Southern’s women’s 4x100 relay team also made school history, as it broke the school record with a time of 44.27 at the NCAA West Regional to become the first Saluki women’s 400m relay team to qualify for the national meet. Assistant Coach (Sprints)
DeShawn Marshal Jr. a native of Columbus, Ohio joined the Southern Illinois staff as an assistant coach focusing on the Sprints/Hurdles in the Fall of 2024. Prior to SIU, Coach Marshall had a 3 year stint at University of Cumberlands (KY) where he was the Sprints/Hurdles Assistant Coach. Marshall and the UC Patriots went on to win 2 NAIA National Championships in his time operating at Cumberlands. From 2021-2024, he had 48 NAIA National Qualifiers, 16 School Records & 6 First Team All Americans. Marshall coached Iloba Godspower to breaking the Conference/Meet Record in the Men’s 60m Dash. He was awarded Mid-South Conference Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year in the 2024 season. Coach Marshall also had a 1 year stop at Florida A&M as the Volunteer Sprints & Hurdles Coach before relocating to Cumberlands. Coach Marshall attended the Indiana Institute of Technology, Fort Wayne Indiana before transferring to The Ohio State University in 2014 and earning a Bachelor of Science in Education and Human Ecology with Specialization in Sports Industry, Minor in Business Communication 2017. He recently earned a Level 2 certification for USTFCCCA Sprints/Hurdles/Relay Coach. Marshall's collegiate career was highlighted with two NAIA National Championships in the 400m, Indoor and Outdoor (2014) and being a 5x All American while competing for Ohio State (4x100 relay, 200m dash, 4x400 relay). Assistant Coach (Jumps)
Coach Jake Brydson enters his third season with the Salukis for the 2024-2025 season. In 2024, Brydson’s jumpers closed out the outdoor season with a 1-3-6-7 finish at the 2024 MVC Championship in the Men’s Triple Jump, headlined by Darius Fuller’s championship-winning and regional qualifying performance. Throughout the season, the Saluki jumps group tallied 56 team points across indoor and outdoor, with three podium finishes. In 2023, the Saluki jumpers amassed another three podium finishes, book ended with Dawson Plab’s Indoor MVC Championship in the Men’s High Jump and Jadon Robertson’s podium finish in the Outdoor Men’s Long Jump. Indoors, Plab was named the MVC Performance of the Meet, and Outdoors, Robertson was named the MVC Freshman of the Meet, with scoring performances in the Long Jump (Third), High Jump (Fourth), 110m Hurdles (Fourth), and Javelin Throw (Sixth). Plab’s season concluded at the NCAA First Round and Robertson capped the year with a Fourth Place Finish at the USA U20 National Championship in his debut decathlon. Prior to joining the Salukis, Brydson spent four years at Missouri State University, where athletes he coached amassed five MVC Individual Championships across Triple Jump, Long Jump, and Javelin, as well as six second-place finishes and five third Place Finishes.
