State University of New York at Morrisville Women's Ice Hockey

John Briggs was appointed as head coach of the SUNY Morrisville women's ice hockey program for the 2023-24 season. In his first season, he led the Mustangs to the SUNYAC Championship semifinals with a 12-14-0 overall record and 7-11-0 league slate. Briggs came to Morrisville from SUNY Cortland, where he spent two seasons as assistant coach with the Red Dragons. During his time at Cortland, he helped guide the team to back-to-back appearances in the Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) championship finals, with the program compiling 38 wins, 13 losses and one tie over two seasons, including a 26-9-1 record in league play. The 2021-22 Cortland coaching staff was recognized as the NEWHL Coaching Staff of the Year. Briggs is Level I USA Hockey Certified and was a 2022 National Camp Coach invitee. Prior to Cortland, he served as assistant coach for the Richland Rockies Women's Hockey team from 2019-21 and coached youth boys' hockey teams. Briggs played junior hockey in New Jersey and junior and semi-pro hockey in Scotland. He holds a bachelor's degree in coaching from SUNY Cortland (2022) and studied sports coaching and development at Abertay University in Dundee, Scotland. He also works as an Assistant Golf Professional at Skaneateles Country Club.
