Longtime high school baseball coach Barry Vetter begins his second season on the Sewanee baseball staff as an assistant coach for the 2026 season and 38th year in coaching at the high school and collegiate levels. Vetter has compiled a 488-232 overall record in 26 years as a head coach. He spent six years at Shelbyville Central, three as an assistant and three as head coach for the Golden Eagles. He moved to Smyrna for two seasons as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach for the Bulldogs in 1999. Vetter reached the TSSAA State Tournament in 2007 at Smyrna with the help of former Vanderbilt hurler and Major Leaguer Sonny Gray. He spent 17 seasons as the head coach at Smyrna, posting a 321-252 record. From 2016-17 he worked as an assistant coach at Blackman, helping the Blaze reach the state tournament in 2017, finishing with a 29-12 record. He became the head coach at Blackman in 2018, mentoring Drew Beam, former University of Tennessee hurler. Vetter played one season at Martin College in Pulaski, Tenn., as a pitcher and middle infielder before pitching one year at Roane State Community College. He spent his final two years of college as a pitcher at Middle Tennessee State, earning his bachelor's from Middle Tennessee in HPERS in 1989 and a master's in Recreation in 1994.
