Biography

John Adamson enters his fifth season as an assistant coach with the University of Massachusetts men’s and women’s track and field programs in 2019-20 and works with the Minutemen middle distance runners, long sprinters, intermediate hurdlers and high jumpers and Minutewomen intermediate hurdlers and high jumpers. In his first season back at his alma mater (2015-16), Adamson's athletes achieved school records in the 200, 400, 500 and 4x400, as well as additional top five all-time performances in the dash, 200, 800, 4x400 and high jump. His athletes won Atlantic 10 and New England Championships and earned Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie Honors, All-Atlantic 10, All-New England and All-ECAC awards, as well as qualifying for the NCAA East Regional and the USATF Jr. National Championships. Most recently in 2019, Jada Harris became the first UMass field performer to reach the NCAA Championships since 1995 where she earned Honorable Mention All-America honors. Prior to returning to UMass, Adamson was a member of the Amherst College track and field and cross country staffs from 1997-2012. Adamson began his career at Amherst as assistant coach for men's and women's track and field, concentrating on coaching the programs' sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. His role evolved during his 15-year tenure, during which time he also had varying responsibilities for coaching athletes in the multi-events, throws, long sprints, middle distances and cross country.
