Richard Mulrooney

Biography

Richard Mulrooney was named the program’s fourth head coach on Feb. 25, 2014. The former Major League Soccer and United States Men’s National Team player, a Memphis native, returned to his hometown in January of 2013 when he was named a Tigers assistant coach under then-head coach Richie Grant. He served as an assistant for one season before being promoted to his current position. A season for the record books, Mulrooney led his 2023 Tigers to an 11-6-2 record, the first 10+ win season since 2019, and a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Memphis made history during its Nov. 16 game against 24th-ranked SIUE; the Tigers were picked to host the First Round match against the Cougars and ended up with the 2-1 victory, the first NCAA Tournament win for the program. Along with the top-25 win over SIUE, Memphis stunned the soccer world when they claimed a 1-0 win over then 9th-ranked Missouri State in October. Forward Lineker Rodriguez dos Santos, who was the unanimous selection for the AAC's Offensive Player of the Year went on to earn United Soccer Coaches All-American honors. Mulrooney and the Tigers finished the historic 2022 season with a 9-6-4 overall record and a big to the NCAA Tournament - the first since the 2004 season and the first at-large bid for the program.
