Assistant Coach (Sprints/Hurdles/Relays)
Sebek O’Jike Maat (Coach O) returned to his alma mater, the University of Memphis, in 2022 and currently serves as Assistant Coach for the men’s and women’s sprint, hurdle, and relay groups. Since his return, Maat’s athletes have established themselves among the best in program history, producing 10 school records, 13 NCAA East Preliminary qualifiers, and 18 conference medalists in just three seasons. Most recently, his groups set new standards in both men’s and women’s relays, highlighted by program records in the men’s 4x400m (3:06.02, 2025) and women’s 4x400m (3:32.27, 2025). His event groups have also delivered record-breaking individual performances, including Madison Fleming winning the American conference title in the 60m hurdles (8.17, 2024). She also holds the school record in the 100m hurdles (13.18, 2024). Prior Ochonogor’s 400m hurdles breakthrough (49.87, 2025), and multiple sprint and jump marks led by Jadaja Baxter now sit atop the University of Memphis record boards. Before returning to Memphis, Maat spent four seasons at Eastern Kentucky University, where he coached sprints, hurdles, jumps, and multis. He was elevated to the title of associate head coach in 2022 after leading EKU athletes to eight school records, 22 top-five all-time program marks, five NCAA East Preliminary entries and eight conference titles, as well as a 2022 USA U-20 Qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles. Assistant Coach (Jumps / Pole Vault)
Xavier Kennedy joins the Memphis Tigers after coaching at Brewton-Parker College from 2021-2023. In Kennedy’s first season as an assistant coach, he oversaw the sprints, jumps and hurdles event groups at BPC before being promoted to head coach, in June 2022. In the first season at BPC, Kennedy helped lead the program to its first conference title in the history of the program. The men’s program was crowned Indoor Southern States Athletic Conference Champions, which was also the inaugural indoor championship for the conference. Kennedy also helped coach Brandon Schultz, who broke the NAIA National Record in the indoor 60-meter hurdles in 7.80 seconds, as he became back-to-back NAIA 60-meter hurdle National Champion. During his time at BPC, Kennedy coached nine NAIA National Qualifiers, a pair of NAIA-All Americans and a dozen SSAC Conference Champions. Kennedy was also a part of the program's success that had (66) all-conference athletes, (1) Freshman All-Conference Cross Country athlete, (11) academic all-conference cross country athletes and (6) academic all-conference track & field athletes. He helped coach athletes to 51 school-record breaking performances during his time coaching at BPC. Kennedy got his start in coaching with the Southeast Striders Track & Field Club for six seasons in Conyers, Ga. Kennedy has pursued many facets of track and field as he was a DI long and triple jumper at Troy University, an NCSA Track and Field evaluator and a GATFXCCA Clinician in 2023.
