about the quarterback. In all six seasons, he produced a 1,000-yard rusher. In four of those seasons, a running back finished as a top-10 rusher in Grand Valley State history. Before becoming head coach, Martin served as the defensive coordinator for the Lakers in 2003, helping GVSU win a national championship. Martin’s defense allowed just nine total points in the final three games of the playoff run and among the ranked top-10 nationally in scoring, rushing and total defense that season. Martin served as the defensive backs and outside linebackers coach at GVSU from 2000-02. Prior to arriving in Allendale, Mich., Martin spent time at Eastern Michigan (1998-1999, linebackers), Millikin University (1996-97, defensive coordinator/defensive backs), Wittenberg University (1994-95, linebackers) and Mankato State University (1992-93, graduate assistant/linebackers). While attending Millikin (1986-90), Martin was an All-American safety and was selected as a GTE Academic All-American. He doubled as an All-American place kicker, received Academic All-District honors for the Millikin baseball team and was inducted into the Millikin Hall of Fame in 2008. He graduated in 1990 with a degree in accounting and earned his master’s degree in physical education from Mankato State University in 1993. Miami has also forced 63 turnovers and produced 93 sacks since the beginning of 2022. Brechin has also produced 18 All-MAC performers during his time in Oxford, 14 coming since the 2022 campaign. In Brechin's first year running the defense, Miami led the league in scoring defense (22.6) and rush defense (135.9) and forced 22 turnovers, a Miami best since head coach Chuck Martin's arrival in 2014. Patton, a four-year letterman at tight end for Miami from 1989-92, earned First Team All-MAC honors and was a team captain as a senior in 1992. Patton has 30 years of experience coaching the offensive line and has coached in 16 bowl games and eight conference championships. This past season Miami's offensive line produced a 1,000-yard rusher for the second straight season and helped protect quarterback Brett Gabbert, who earned first-team All-MAC accolades. Miami's offensive line had one of the best seasons in recent memory in 2023. Not only two two members of the offensive line earn All-MAC honors, Miami rushed for 158.1 yards per game, the second-highest season average in the past 20 years. Miami had it's first 1,000 yard rusher since 2005 and the RedHawks allowed just 1.7 sacks per contest, fourth-best in the MAC. During his time with the RedHawks, Patton has coached four players that have earned All-MAC honors. Prior to joining Miami, Patton served as the offensive line coach/run game coordinator for the Eastern Michigan Eagles for the past two years. He was also a key contributor to third down game plans. Prior to Merrimack he was an Offensive Line Graduate Assistant for the RedHawks for the 2023 season, helping Miami to a MAC Championship. Other than working alongside assistant coach James Patten, he was responsible for run-game and playbook visual drawings and broke down opponent front-seven film. Aylward has also spent time at Notre Dame as a graduate assistant in 2022 and a Tight Ends Offensive Analyst from 2019-21.

This past season, Eli Blakey and Silas Walters found spots on the All-MAC team as the RedHawks led the conference with 14 interceptions. Blakey was also an All-MAC performer in 2024. White, the identical-twin brother of former assistant coach Myles White (recently took a job with the Green Bay Packers), comes to Miami after spending one season as Utah State's defensive passing game coordinator and cornerbacks coach. That year, the Aggies allowed 219.6 yards passing per game and had two defensive backs earn all-conference honors. Prior to Utah State, White spent the 2022 season as cornerbacks coach at Stephen F. Austin, where he helped the Lumberjacks win the Western Athletic Conference Championship. White was part of an SFA defense that ranked among the best at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level, forcing 19 turnovers with 11 interceptions and eight fumbles, and a pair of defensive touchdowns. The two-time team captain also lettered for the OWU basketball team and was a member of the Miami football team in 2022. Ries completed his special education degree from OWU in 2022 and his master's degree in sports administration from Miami in 2024.
