Darren Gauson was named UNM’s Head Coach for Track & Field / Cross Country on June 30, 2023. In his first two seasons at the helm in Albuquerque, Gauson has led the Lobos to three individual national titles, five Mountain West team titles and six national individual runners-up, producing 26 All-American finishes. In the 2024-25 academic year, New Mexico was the only program in the nation to finish in the Top 10 in the team score at both NCAA Cross Country & Outdoor Track & Field Championships — the Lobo women finished seventh in the nation in XC and ninth outdoors, while the men finished ninth in cross country and fifth outdoors. Berryman came to UNM in the Summer of 2023 from Bradley, where he was a part of Darren Gauson’s staff as an assistant coach. During his season in Peoria, the Braves won the Missouri Valley women’s cross country championship and had individuals qualify for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Berryman spent the 2021-22 season as an intern at his alma mater, Cal State East Bay, assisting with the program’s recruiting, meet management and social media. A native of Long Beach, Calif., Berryman is a 2022 graduate of CSUEB, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in sport nutrition and wellness. He ran three seasons for the Pioneers and was a two-year captain of the Cal State East Bay track & field team.
