Head Women's Hockey Coach
Mike Carroll is entering his 27th season as the head women's hockey coach at Gustavus in the 2025-26 season. During his tenure behind the Gustie bench, Carroll has turned Gustavus women's hockey into one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division III. He has compiled an overall record of 535-135-48 in 26 seasons and has the most coaching victories in the history of the program. Carroll is the second winningest coach all-time in NCAA Division III women's hockey with 535 wins and a winning percentage of .745. Carroll and the 2022-23 women's hockey team won the first NCAA DIII National Championship for a team in the West Region, marking the program and the conference's first women's hockey national championship. The Gusties defeated Amherst on the road in a triple overtime thriller, 2-1, playing in the longest title game in Division III history. Carroll has directed the Gusties to 18 MIAC regular season titles and has been named the MIAC Coach-of-the-Year nine times. In addition to coaching 54 players who have earned All-Conference honors 103 times, he has coached nine MIAC Players-of-the-Year. Carroll has also worked with 20 players who have earned All-America distinction 32 times and two American Hockey Coaches Association Players-of-the-Year. Prior to coming to Gustavus, Carroll served as the head boys' hockey coach at Mankato West High School from 1991 to 1999. Assistant Women's Hockey Coach - Strength & Conditioning
Allie Stanger is in her sixth year on the Gustavus women's hockey coaching staff in the 2024-25 academic year. Stanger joined the Gustavus coaching staff in 2019 as a graduate assistant after a successful four-year playing career for the Gusties. Stanger coaches primarily forwards and serves as the team's head strength and conditioning coach. Since Stanger has been with the Gusties as a coach, the team has won four MIAC regular season titles, four MIAC Playoff Championships, made four NCAA appearances, and took home the program's first-ever national championship. Last season, the Gusties collected their fourth consecutive MIAC championship sweep, punching a ticket to the NCAA tourney, where they fell to eventual national champions UW-River Falls in the quarterfinals. In Stanger's five seasons behind the bench, the Gusties have compiled a record of 100-17-4 overall and 62-4-4 in the MIAC. Stanger has helped six forwards earn 16 All-Conference honors, and one earn two All-America nods (Hailey Holland). Holland went on to become one of the greatest players in program history, totaling 74 goals and 68 assists for 142 points in 121 games. As a player, Stanger played in 107 games, notching 19 goals and 24 assists for 43 points with the Gusties going 64-28-17 during her time. A two-year captain for Gustavus, Stanger was a part of the 2016-17 team that finished third in the NCAA Tournament and she was named MIAC All-Conference in 2018-19. Andrea Peterson, a 2007 Gustavus graduate, returned to the Gustie coaching staff in 2022 after previously serving as a high school girls' hockey coach. Peterson was an assistant coach at Gustavus from 2007-11 before moving on to New Prague Area Schools where she was a physical education teacher and head girls' hockey coach from 2012-18. Since 2015, Peterson has taught at Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools and was an assistant girls' hockey coach at Prior Lake from 2019-22. Peterson was promoted to Associate Head Coach at Gustavus in June of 2024. The Gustavus women's hockey team has claimed six MIAC regular season titles, six playoff championships, six NCAA tournament appearances, and a national championship in Peterson's seven total years. Assistant Women's Hockey Coach - Goalies
Steve Carroll is in his 23rd season as an assistant coach with the Gusties in the 2024-25 season. His responsibilities include helping recruit student-athletes and developing Gustavus goalies. Alongside brother and head coach Mike Carroll, the Gusties have seen extraordinary success on the ice, winning 16 conference regular season titles, 14 MIAC Playoff Championships, and making 16 NCAA postseason appearances, including a national championship in 2022-23. During Carroll's tenure behind the bench for the Gusties, he's developed a consistent pipeline of exceptional goaltending squads. Carroll has coached four goalies to seven All-Conference honors and two All-Americans in Amanda DiNella, and Katie McCoy. Carroll has more than 30 years of goalie coaching experience and is regarded as one of the top goalie instructors in the Midwest. He also serves as goalie coach-in-chief for USA Hockey's Minnesota District. Carroll runs his own goalie school and each year coaches hundreds of boys and girls of all skill levels from all across the country. He was named the 2024 winner of USA Hockey's National Goaltending Developer Award. As a player, Carroll was a two-time All-America goaltender for Minnesota State University-Mankato. He was selected as the 1980 NCAA Division II National Tournament MVP after leading his team to a national title.
