Head Men's Tennis Coach
Updated 5/11/26 Middle Tennessee’s men’s tennis program is rich in history, and its current head coach, Jimmy Borendame, has now spent 17 years at the helm, making the Blue Raiders a perennial favorite for league titles and competing against the nation’s top talent along the way. Borendame, a Wheaton, Illinois product, helped his team to Sun Belt Conference championships in 2011 and 2012 and most recently followed up with a 7-peat of the Conference USA Championship in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026. He’s an 12-time Coach of the Year as Middle Tennessee’s leader. Borendame has led the Blue Raiders to back-to-back top 25 finishes in 2022 and 2023. The current Blue Raider head man came to Murfreesboro by way of Drake after serving a one-year stint as the head men’s tennis coach of the Bulldogs in Des Moines, Iowa. He led Drake to a 15-9 record, which included seven wins in an eight-match stretch from late February to mid-March. Prior to his time in Des Moines, Borendame spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, including an associate head coaching role for the 2009 season. The Hokies posted a 70-56 (.556) mark, including three NCAA tournament appearances, during his stay in Blacksburg. When his playing days at Butler were complete, Borendame spent one year each at West Virginia (2003) and William & Mary (2004) as an assistant coach. Assistant Coach
Assistant coach Josh McDermott enters his second season as part of Jimmy Borendame’s staff with the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. He spent the 2023 and 2024 season as an assistant coach at Belmont University. In 2022, he graduated with a masters in Sport Administration. During the 2025 season, McDermott helped the Blue Raiders achieve a Conference USA title and a berth into the NCAA tournament. Marking McDermott's second conference title as assistant coach and first with Middle Tennessee. He coached and help the pairing of Karim Al-Amin and Ondrej Horak to a national ranking of No. 40 during the 2025 season. For the 2025 season, six players received 1st Team All-Conferrence honors and four players received 2nd Team All-Conference honors. McDermott served as the interim head coach for the Bruins during the spring season of 2024. In 2024, McDermott helped the Bruins win the Horizon League regular season. He helped Alfred Wallin in receiving Horizon League Player of the Year. Three players received 1st Team all-conference honors last season for the Bruins. Assisted Alfred Wallin in reaching the final round of Qualifying at the ITA All Americans. During the 2023 season, he helped lead Belmont to a 21-6 record and Belmont’s first ever national ranking at 74. The Bruins won the Horizon League regular season and Horizon League conference championship to go undefeated in conference play, while also making the first round of NCAA Tournament.
