He was named to the post full-time in April, 2006, after serving the 2005-06 season as the interim head coach. Under Hopkins' leadership, the Spartans enjoyed several of their best seasons ever. His dual meet record as San Jose State's head coach after the 2020 season is 111-45-2. Hopkins became the first Spartan women's swimming and diving head coach to record 100 dual meet victories in the 2018 season. The Spartans have had unprecedented success in the classroom under Hopkins' leadership with the program being named a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America team in each of the last 23 semesters. In 2019-20, Hopkins and the Spartans were finally able to swim in a pool of their own after five years, as the Student Recreation and Aquatic Center (SRAC) debuted in November as the program's new home. The Spartans posted a 3-0-1 record in dual meets in the new pool and finished 5-2-1 overall on the season. Four SJSU swimmers earned all-conference honors at the 2020 Mountain West Championships. The Spartans took part in the shortened National Invitational Championships where they placed 12th and recorded five times in the school's top-10 list in the one day competition that was ended early due to COVID-19. Hopkins led the Spartans in 2018-19 to a sixth-place finish at the CSCAA Nati
