Derek Cowherd, a former University of Louisville football student-athlete with over 20 years of experience in athletic administration, currently serves as Associate Athletic Director for Community Engagement and Organizational Culture and is a Sport Administrator for Women's Lacrosse and Rowing. He joined the Cardinal Athletics senior leadership team in November 2021 following a national reputation for advancing inclusive excellence, organizational leadership, and staff and student-athlete success. Initially appointed to lead the department's Inclusive Excellence efforts, Cowherd's role has strategically evolved in alignment with departmental and institutional needs. He continues to serve on the department's senior staff, where he oversees sport administration for Rowing and Women's Lacrosse and provides leadership for culture-building, strategic planning, and staff development initiatives across the department. Cowherd serves on multiple university-wide committees, advises senior leaders on staff and student-athlete engagement and hiring practices, and supports key functions related to onboarding, mentorship, and operational policy regarding belonging and organizational culture. He is a member of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Committee (2024–2029), representing the Atlantic Coast Conference, and previously served as the interim sport administrator for Football during the 2022 season. Dr. Katie Nichols is the Director of Mental Performance at University of Louisville Athletics, where she oversees a team of mental performance coaches providing performance enhancement services to athletes, coaches, and support staff through a comprehensive and integrated sport psychology delivery model grounded in holistic performance enhancement and personal development. Previously, she served as a mental performance coach at Amplos, a performance psychology practice, where she provided mental skill training to Clemson Athletics teams and individual athletes, as well as performance enhancement services to corporate partners including Global 500 companies. Prior to Clemson, Nichols coordinated student-welfare and development at the University of Notre Dame, focusing on student-athlete leadership development and community outreach programming. She spent six years at the University of Missouri as a mental performance coach, where she studied under legendary sport psychology professional Dr. Rick McGuire while earning her master's and doctoral degrees in Sport Psychology. Nichols holds a Ph.D. in Sport Psychology Performance and M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology with focus in Career and Sport Psychology from the University of Missouri, as well as dual degrees from the University of Kansas in Sport Science and Psychology. She received the 2017 Doctoral Student Practice Award from the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Matt Pence joined the University of Louisville Athletics Department in August 2021. He serves as Associate Director of Academic Services and is responsible for overseeing academic support for the rowing, women’s golf, and women's soccer teams. Matt came to UofL from Miami University, where he served as an Academic Coordinator working with field hockey, women’s soccer, softball, women’s tennis, men’s basketball, and men’s and women’s track & field and cross country. He began his career in athletic academics as an intern for the Center for Athletic Academic Services (CAAS) at the University of Memphis. As a native of Dayton, Ohio, Pence earned his Bachelor of Science in Education (2014) from Bowling Green State University and Master of Arts in Sports Management (2016) from Wright State University. Matt is an active member of the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals.

A native of Louisville, KY, Sherry Rowe is a Mental Health Therapist at University of Louisville Athletics, beginning in September 2022. With a Master of Science in Social Work and Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Louisville, Rowe brings extensive clinical experience spanning over two decades. She previously maintained a private practice as a therapist at Lyndon Psychiatric Associates from 2004 to 2022, and worked as a social worker and therapist at Peace Hospital from 2000 to 2012, where she was promoted to Supervisor of Inpatient Clinical Services in 2008. Rowe is certified in multiple therapeutic modalities including EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Trauma Informed Care. She is also certified to train LCSWs in clinical practice supervision and mental health professionals in various therapeutic approaches. Her career highlights include working with children, adolescents and young adults, establishing a successful private practice, and training other clinicians through continuing education and clinical supervision. Rowe is married with three children.
