Having directed the Cal Poly men’s soccer program to the 2024 and 2025 Big West regular season titles, Oige Kennedy – the 2024 Big West Coach of the Year honoree – is in his fourth year in charge of the Mustangs. The 2025 season marked another banner year for the Mustangs as Cal Poly matched a program record with 10 shutouts while finishing 16th among 210 NCAA Division I programs with a .750 goals against average. Offensively, Cal Poly featured 14 different goalscorers, finished 35th nationally with a plus-15 goal differential and recorded its highest goal total (30) in 12 years. Individually, a program record eight Mustangs earned All-Big West praise with Nicky McCune collecting a second successive Big West Goalkeeper of the Year honor. During Kennedy’s second season in 2024, Cal Poly claimed the program’s first Big West title on the final day of the regular season while establishing new team records for fewest goals conceded (13, six of which were penalties) and fewest goals per game (0.68) while matching the mark for fewest defeats (four) and producing nine shutouts. Registering a nine-match unbeaten run midway through the 2024 season, Cal Poly lost just once in its final 15 games. Defeating archrival UC Santa Barbara at home and drawing away, Cal Poly also enjoyed its first unbeaten year against the Gauchos since 2015. Helping Cal Poly achieve back-to-back historic campaigns during his first two seasons as a member of Oige Kennedy’s staff, Zach Watson is in his third year as the program’s assistant coach and goalkeeper trainer. During Watson’s initial 2024 season, Cal Poly set new program records for fewest goals conceded (13, six of which were penalties) and fewest goals per game (0.68) while recording nine shutouts. Last fall, Cal Poly matched a program record with 10 shutouts while conceding just 15 goals in 20 matches. The results: back-to-back Big West regular season titles, 16 total victories and with Cal Poly’s defense conceding multiple goals in a match just seven times in 39 outings. Individually, Nicky McCune graduated with back-to-back Big West Goalkeeper of the Year honors (2024-25). Watson arrived at Cal Poly after serving as the lead assistant coach at Division II Newberry (S.C.) College from 2021-23. Heading the team’s development efforts, Watson also coached the program’s reserve side, directing Newberry’s second squad to the 2021 South Atlantic League title.
