Hampton University Men's Basketball

Ivan Thomas is the Head Coach of Hampton University men's basketball, a position he has held since 2024. In his inaugural season, the Pirates achieved multiple milestones including their first undefeated month since 2002-03 and posted a 17-16 record, the second most wins by a first-year head coach in program history. Hampton finished with eight conference wins, surpassing CAA win totals from their first two seasons in the league, and had their deepest CAA Tournament run. The bench averaged 35.5 points per game, fourth most in the country. Before Hampton, Thomas served as Associate Head Coach at Georgetown under Ed Cooley in 2023-24. He spent eight seasons as Assistant Coach at Providence (2016-23), contributing to six postseason appearances including five NCAA Tournament berths. Thomas has extensive high school coaching experience, serving as head coach at Kecoughtan High (2008-15) with a 127-60 record and two Peninsula District championships, T.C. Williams High (2005-08) with a 75-9 record and three league titles, and Edison High (2002-05). He was named Virginia Coach of the Year in 2008 after leading T.C. Williams to a state title. Thomas also spent 13 years coaching the Boo Williams 17U AAU team and holds master's degrees from VCU and George Mason, plus a bachelor's from VCU. A Norfolk, Virginia native, he is married to Dr. Jennifer Miles-Thomas and has three children.

Calvin Cage enters his second season on the Pirates coaching staff and is an inaugural member of Coach Ivan Thomas's staff. This offseason, Cage received a promotion, adding the Recruiting Coordinator role. Cage comes from Buffalo where he spent one season as an assistant coach under George Halcovage III. The former UB guard was the head of player development for the Bulls. Prior to joining Buffalo's staff, Cage spent four seasons at Canisius. With the Golden Griffins, he coached three All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Third Team selections Jordan Henders, Malek Green, and Malik Johnson. During his tenure with the program, Canisius won a total of 29 conference contests. In the high school ranks Cage had a two-year stint as an assistant coach for the Team Takeover 17-U program, part of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL). With Team Takeover he helped develop and lead skill-based practices, recruited new talent, planned travel, and scheduled logistics for the team. Cage is also the founder and director of Cage Clinics in Washington, D.C. He would get his coaching start at Rock Creek Christian Academy in Upper Marlboro, Md. as the head coach of the junior varsity program. A 2006 graduate of UB, Cage played 121 career games for the Bulls from 2002-06. He capped his collegiate career by earning All-MAC Second Team honors after he led the Bulls in scoring average with 18.5 points per contest in his senior campaign. Greg Fahey enters his second season with the program as Associate Head Coach and General Manager at Hampton. He has experience in the NIL space working with Coach Ed Cooley and Mark Fox during his tenure with Georgetown. Fahey spent four seasons at Siena serving as assistant coach and director of basketball operations, where he helped develop eight all-conference players including two MAAC Player of the year award winners in Manny Camper and Denver Nuggets Guard Jalen Pickett. The Saints also captured back-to-back MAAC Regular Season Championships. Before Siena, Fahey spent one season as a graduate assistant at Providence College. He first entered the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach for two seasons at Division III FDU Florham. Fahey began his coaching career as head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach at New Jersey powerhouse St. Benedict's Prep, helping guide the Gray Bees to an 89-15 record with a peak ranking of No. 8 nationally. He also spent four seasons on the Nike EYBL circuit with the City Rocks. A native of Randolph, New Jersey, Fahey graduated from Marist College in 2013 with a degree in sports communications and a minor in psychology. He completed a master's degree from Providence College in higher education and earned a certificate in sports administration in 2022.

Kyron Cartwright enters his second season with the program. Cartwright was an inaugural member of Coach Ivan Thomas's staff. This offseason, he was promoted and given the role of Offensive Coordinator. Hampton saw a massive improvement in its offensive efficiency. According to kenpom.com the Pirates had a rating of 103.8 and ranked 226th in the country, which was a 118-spot increase from the 2023-24 season. Hampton also had a major increase in its offensive rebounding percentage. The program at 34 percent was ranked 56th in the country. Cartwright had spent his one season at Georgetown as the Video and Social Media Coordinator. Cartwright reunited with his college coach in December of 2022 when he was hired as a special assistant. The Friars made their second consecutive NCAA Tournament as an 11 seed but fell to Kentucky 61-53. The Program was ranked in the AP and Coaches Poll for eight straight weeks. The 2023 NCAA Tournament was Providence's seventh appearance in ten years. The Compton, Calif. native, began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Minnesota Crookston out of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. After retiring from his professional playing career, he began his coaching journey at Saint Thomas Academy as an assistant coach. After his college playing career, Cartwright spent four years playing overseas. His first professional team was with Alba Fehervar. Mike Carr enters his second season with the program as Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator for Hampton. He was an inaugural member of Coach Ivan Thomas's staff and was promoted to Defensive Coordinator this offseason. Under his defensive leadership, Hampton saw a massive jump in defensive efficiency, ranking 200th nationally in the 2024-25 season, a 114-spot improvement from the previous year. The Pirates held opponents to 70 points per game and forced 12.9 turnovers per contest, ranking 92nd nationally and 2nd in the CAA. Prior to Hampton, Carr spent one season at Rice under Scott Pera, where he worked on the defensive side and helped the Owls improve 138 spots in NCAA Division I rankings for points allowed. He previously spent two seasons at Rider University managing administrative components and assisting with player development, helping the Broncs improve from 11th place in the MAAC in 2021 to a second-place finish in 2023, developing two All-MAAC selections along the way. Carr spent one season as a graduate assistant at Nevada under Steve Alford, coaching All-Mountain West selection Grant Sherfield. He began his coaching career in 2019-20 as an assistant coach at Wallace State Community College under Collin Dimitroff. Before coaching, he worked as a Player Development Coach with Pro-Reps Performance in New York City. Ryan Hitchens joined Coach Ivan Thomas's staff this summer in the Video Coordinator role. The Omaha, Neb. native, spent the previous two seasons with Horizon League member Cleveland State. During his tenure with the Vikings, the program recorded consecutive 20-plus win seasons. This past season, Cleveland State finished second in its conference. The Vikings fell in the semi-final round of the Horizon League Tournament. Before joining the ranks at Cleveland State, Hitchens was a student manager for the Ohio women's basketball team. He spent five seasons with the program.
