Head Athletic Trainer (MBB)
Chris Lapole is the Head Athletic Trainer for Marshall and is the athletic trainer for the Thundering Herd men’s basketball program. Chris was named as the West Virginia Athletic Trainers' Association "Trainer of the Year" in 2023 and currently serves as an Athletics Healthcare Administrator for Marshall University, as well as a member of the university's Non-Classified Staff Council. He is also the Sun Belt Conference representative for the Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine to the National Athletic Trainers' Association. Lapole is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is certified as a strength and conditioning specialist, a CPR instructor and in SFDN 1 Dry Needling. Lapole spent three years (2011-2014) at Morehead State University where he served as the primary contact for football, while overseeing all aspects of the department. He served as the men’s basketball trainer and assisted with all aspects of the operation during his first year at MSU. Prior to arriving at Morehead State, Lapole spent nearly three years (2009-11) as a surgical first assistant and athletic trainer for Specialty Orthopaedics in Louisville, Ky. Lapole previously spent 10 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds organization, serving as athletic trainer for the Billings Mustangs (1999), Clinton Lumberkings (2000), Mudville Nine (2001), Stockton Ports (2002), Potomac Cannons (2003), Chattanooga Lookouts (2004) and Louisville Bats (2005-08). Director of Olympic Sports Performance
Dylan Genung was hired as the Director of Olympic Sports Performance in 2024. Genung previously oversaw the strength and conditioning program at Morehead State University that assisted in leading men's basketball to two NCAA appearances in 2020-21 and 2023-24, four straight 20-win seasons, including a program record 26 victories in 2023-24, and an NIT win over Clemson in 2022-23. Genung helped guide several players to all-conference honors, including Mark Freeman's OVC Player of the Year award in 2022-23, Riley Minix's OVC Player of the Year honor in 2023-24, Auburn standout Johni Broome taking home OVC Defensive Player of the Year accolades in 2021-22, as well as OVC Defensive Player of the Year Alex Gross in 2022-23. Genung also helped the 2021 volleyball team to an OVC Regular Season and Tournament Championships as the Eagles went on to win their first ever NCAA tournament match. Prior to joining Morehead State, Genung served various roles at Marshall and Kentucky Christian, as well as owning and operating his own training facility, Lifted Sports Performance. With a Masters Degree in exercise science and 10+ years of strength and conditioning experience, he continuously strives to improve his athletes, as well as his own knowledge within the coaching field. He resides in Olive Hill, Ky., with his wife MaKaylen, and four children, Nia, Teagan, Theo & Josie.
