NC State's McMurray Family Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan has announced that former NC State captain Justin Gainey will return to Raleigh as the new head coach of the NC State men's basketball program. "I am honored to announce Justin Gainey as our new head coach for the NC State men's basketball program," said Corrigan. "Not only are we welcoming back one of our own, but we are welcoming a tough, tenacious and experienced coach who I am confident is the right fit for our program and will continue to position the Pack for success on the national stage. Justin understands what this program means because he has lived and breathed it and I am very excited that he is our basketball coach." He directs, shoots and edits all video content for the program, including features, recaps, highlights and other creative productions. Medland joined NC State in September 2022 after serving as Director of Creative Content at Monmouth for one year. At Monmouth, he produced all video content for in-venue video boards, social media and recruiting across the department’s 24 athletic programs, while traveling with the flagship sports of football and men’s and women’s basketball. Prior to Monmouth, Medland worked at Centre College as an Athletics Communications Assistant from February 2021 to October 2021. There, he managed creative video production and live broadcasts for 24 Division III sports, assisted in managing social media accounts, maintained the website’s multimedia archive and contributed to strategic and logistical planning for the IWAE Project, a $50 million on-campus construction initiative. Medland graduated from Temple University in 2020 with a degree in journalism. Medland and his wife, Jamie, reside in Raleigh.

He spent his first four seasons at NC State as assistant director of basketball operations and was the director of operations during the 2024-25 season. Zupko came to NC State from Drexel where he spent four seasons as coordinator of basketball operations. Prior to joining Drexel's staff, Zupko worked for the Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. since 2006 where he spent nine years as the director of Hoop Group Skills Camp as well as a year as the assistant director of Hoop Group Elite Basketball Camp. In this position, Zupko helped grow the camp to 1975 campers with notable alumni including Karl Anthony-Towns, Kyrie Irving and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Before he moved to the Hoop Group, Zupko spent six seasons as an assistant basketball coach at Hargrave Military Academy, including four seasons as an assistant for Kevin Keatts. He was a member of the Hargrave staff when the team won the national championship in 2004. There helped send 58 players to Division I, while six would go on to play in the NBA, including Joe Alexander, the No. 8 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Zupko also helped to produce two McDonald's All-Americans. At Hargrave, Zupko also served as the head coach of the varsity lacrosse team. He served as the conference lead for the sports information directors committee and scheduling committee, while also handling the day-to-day communications efforts for multiple sports, including men’s basketball. In addition, he served as the Assistant Media Coordinator for the 2015 Men’s Final Four and was the Media Coordinator for the 2016 Women’s Final Four. Hammel spent two years on the public relations staff with the Indianapolis Colts for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. He helped edit the weekly game notes packets, wrote stories for the official team website and provided gameday staffing, including Super Bowl XLIV. A native of Indianapolis, Ind., Hammel graduated from the University of Tennessee. He worked in the sports information department while at UT, handling day-to-day media responsibilities for the men’s tennis team while also assisting with the men’s basketball and football programs. Hammel and his wife, Abby, reside in Raleigh with their children, Olivia, Grant and Jack.
