Phil Baretela enters his eighth season as head coach of RIT's swimming and diving programs in 2025–26. Since taking over in 2018, he has led the Tigers to historic success, including four consecutive Liberty League men's team titles and numerous NCAA qualifiers. Under Baretela's leadership, RIT swimmers have broken 33 of 38 school records. His teams consistently excel both athletically and academically, earning CSCAA Team Academic All-America honors for seven straight seasons. Prior to becoming head coach, Baretela spent 12 years as an assistant at RIT, working extensively with sprinters and mentoring multiple All-Americans. He also coached at Monroe Community College, contributing to six NJCAA national titles, and directed the Golden Comets Swim Club, developing swimmers who qualified for USA Swimming national and Olympic trials. A 1994 graduate of SUNY Cortland with a degree in criminology, Baretela was a standout sprinter and part of Cortland's 1993 SUNYAC championship team. He retired from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office after 21 years of service and resides in Chili, N.Y., with his wife Holly and their family.

Head Diving Coach

Cliff Devries enters his 24th year as the diving coach for the Tigers in 2025-26. In that time, he has coached multiple NCAA Division III All-Americans. Last season, Devries coached three divers who earned All-American honors. On the men's side, Gellert Kish placed sixth in the 3m and seventh in the 1m while teammate Luke Albanese took 10th in the 3m and ninth in the 1m. For the women's team, Maddi Williams took eighth overall in the 3m event. In 2018, Devries was awarded the prestigious Richard E. Steadman Award by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America. He became the first diving coach to win the hallowed award, given annually to a swimming or diving coach in high school, club, or university ranks who has done the most to spread happiness in Coach Steadman's beloved sport of swimming and diving. Under his tutelage, divers Quinn Donahoe and Matt Joseph earned All-American honors in 2007 and 2008. In 2011, Evan Wendt earned All-American honors in both the 1-and 3-meter diving. In 2013, John Tellgren garnered All-American accolades in both the 1- and 3-meter events. Devries was named the Upper New York State Athletic Conference Diving Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016. It is Devries' second stint with RIT. Daniel Dubois joined the RIT Swimming & Diving coaching staff prior to the 2024-25 season. Dubois previously served as head coach at nearby Monroe Community College (MCC) for over 25 seasons. Inducted into the National Junior College Swimming & Diving Hall of Fame in 2023, he guided the Tribune men and women to 44 Region 3 Championships while mentoring 19 individual national champions. He also served as the NJCAA Swimming & Diving Coaches Association President for 16 years. Dubois has also been an adjunct Health and Physical Education professor at MCC since 1998, teaching a variety of classes within the department.
