Head Coach
Stanley Redwine is in his 25th season at the helm of the Kansas track & field and cross country programs during the 2024-25 seasons, making Redwine the longest tenured head coach in the program’s history. Already a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Redwine is one of the most well-respected coaches in the United States. A former All-American himself at the University of Arkansas, Redwine is a five-time Big 12 Coach of the Year, and has coached 20 individual NCAA champions, 260 All-Americans and 21 Olympians while at KU, as well as 23 national championship teams between his years as head coach at Kansas and Tulsa and an assistant coach at Arkansas. Redwine was the head coach of Team USA Men's Track and Field at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he led the country's squad to their most successful Olympics yet. While coaching for Team USA, Redwine also reunited with seven current/former Kansas Track and Field Athletes, including Saint Lucian Michael Joseph, who became the 2023 Indoor 400m Big 12 Champion under Coach Redwine. Joseph was named Saint Lucia's flag bearer, and got to be alongside his college coach in his first-ever Olympics. Prior to Paris, Redwine served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and also served as the men’s head coach for Team USA at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon in 2022, the first World Championships held on U.S. soil. Assistant Head Coach
Michael Whittlesey is in his 17th season as an assistant coach for cross country and middle distance/distance running at Kansas. Throughout his career, guiding runners both on the trails and the track, Whittlesey has accumulated impressive numbers in big achievements, including 12 NCAA Champions, 100 All-Americans, 59 conference Champions (18 Big 12 Champions) 10 USA National Champions and three American records. The KU distance program has seen great success under Whittlesey’s tutelage, most recently during the 2025 track season where Whittlesey’s groups had significant success at the Big 12 Championships. Sophomore Emmah Jemutai won the 1500m in a new Kansas record time of 4:08.60 and finished third in the 800m, also setting the KU record 2:01.83. Jemutai also finished fourth in the Big 12 indoor mile. Junior Tanner Talley and sophomore Paul Ngasharr placed third and sixth for the men in the outdoor 1500m. Freshman standout Ebba Cronholm also finished third at the Big 12 Championships in the steeplechase and then set a new Jayhawk record in the event at the NCAA Championships in a mark of 9:46.53. Another recent Jayhawk standout under Whittlesey is Chandler Gibbens, who reset the KU records in the 10k, Indoor and Outdoor 5Ks. Gibbens won both events at the 2023 Outdoor Big 12 Championships, becoming the first Jayhawk to win both events in their career for the men’s program. Tim Byers was named Meet Director for Kansas Track and Field in August 2022. As the Director of Cross Country and Track & Field from 2014-2022 at Baker University, Byers helped them to nine conference championships including four men’s track and field championships, three men’s cross-country championships and two women’s track and field championships. Byers also was the six-time Heart of America Coach of the Year and was a two-time nominee for NAIA Coach of the Year. Along with conference championship success, coach Byers has also had success at the National level, including sending both the men’s and women’s cross-country team to Nationals in 2021, for the first time in school history. Coach Tim Byers has also had at least one student-athlete compete in every National Championship possible during his 28-year tenure and has also had every team earn at least a 3.0 GPA in his time at Baker. Byers has coached at many collegiate levels, including NAIA, NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and D-III. He has served as the head track and field coach at Ottawa University (Kan.) and Simpson College (Iowa).
