Jack Brown, a former National Champion with 13 years coaching experience collegiately, has been named Wisconsin's seventh swimming and diving head coach, announced on May 21, 2025. Brown arrives after six seasons spent at the University of North Carolina where he served as the associate head coach for the Tar Heels. Prior to UNC, Brown spent seven seasons with Missouri as an assistant coach. Dr. Brown is also a published author, with his recent release of "The Six Questions: A Step-By-Step Guide to Swimming Fast." "We are excited to welcome Jack Brown to Wisconsin," said Director of Athletics Chris McIntosh. "He is a very accomplished coach and has demonstrated a commitment to the entire student-athlete experience. Jack's care for student-athlete personal growth, as well as athletic development, aligns perfectly with our department's mission. His experience competing at the highest level of collegiate swimming as well as working alongside elite coaches will bring tremendous perspective and energy to our swimming and diving program." With the Tar Heels, Brown coached the individual medley group, middle-distance, and distance groups, in addition to serving as the teams' mental performance coach. In the 2022-23 season, he helped the women's team record their highest NCAA finish since 2001, placing 10th, while the men finished 23rd at the NCAA National Championship in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Capobianco is a four-time senior National Champion; three individual 3-meter titles, and one synchronized 3-meter title. The two-time Olympian competed in the Paris 2024 Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where he earned a Silver medal in the 3m springboard synchro. In 2019 at the World Championships, the North Carolina native earned Bronze in the mixed team event. As a coach, since 2024 Capobianco has been with USA Diving as a High Performance coach where he has coached multiple members of USA Diving's High Performance Squad that are based in Bloomington, Ind. He has also been the head diving coach at the Johansen Diving Academy since 2022. No stranger to the Big Ten, Capobianco graduated and competed at Indiana University and was part of the men's diving team from 2017-2023. During his time at Indiana, he helped lead his team to three Big Ten Championships and two Top 4 finishes at the NCAA Championships. His collegiate accolades include; three-time NCAA Champion, five-time Big Ten Champion, three-time Big Ten Diver of the Year, Indiana Athlete of the Year (2020-2021), and a 12-time All-American.

During her time at Wisconsin, Nelson tallied 13 All-America honors, was a nine-time Big Ten Champion, claimed three individual National Championships at NCAAs, a two-time Big Ten Swimmer of Championships, and was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Year and the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) Women's Swimmer of the Year in 2018-29. Billy completed his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Strength & Conditioning at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and completed his graduate studies in Applied Sports Science at the University of Minnesota. Prior to Wisconsin, he completed internships at UW-Oshkosh, Wisconsin and Minnesota, working with all Olympic sports, as well as worked within multiple private facilities. In 2019-20, Haney coached Beata Nelson to three individual Big Ten Championships in the 200 IM, 100 Back and 200 Back. In a season that was deprived of the NCAA Championships due to COVID-19, Haney helped the women’s program to a 3-2 dual meet record, three school records (100 Fly, 400 Medley Relay, 800 Free Relay) and 12 overall CSCAA All-Americans. Nelson was named the Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, the conference’s most prestigious award given to those who attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work. In addition to the success she garnered with the women’s program in her first two seasons, Haney also helped land SwimSwam’s No. 7 ranked women’s recruiting class of 2020. In her first season with the Badgers, Haney mentored Nelson to become a three-time Individual National Champion in the 200 IM, 100 Back and 200 Back. Nelson, the Big Ten Swimmer of the Year, became a three-time Big Ten Champion in the same events. Additionally, Haney and the staff had one Relay All-American in the 800 Free Relay and two Relay Honorable Mention All-Americans (women’s 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay). He has 20 plus years in the coaching field and recently has served as the associate head coach at Southern Illinois (SIU) and has been with SIU for six years. He was promoted as an assistant in 2019, and in 2023 Fergusson was promoted as the associate head coach for the Saluki's. Prior to SIU he spent four years as an assistant swimming coach at Scottsdale Aquatic Club in Arizona, where he helped lead the program to first place finishes at Winter Junior Nationals in 2015 and 2016. He also served as a volunteer assistant at the University of Arizona (2011-2014) and Arizona State (2015-16), where he worked under swim coaches Eric Hansen and Bob Bowman. There, he was responsible for recruiting assistance and helped develop every day practice planning and workouts. Recently, Patton helped coach the men's team to a third place finish in the 2025 Men's NCAA Championships, and a fourth place finish in 2024. The men's squad also won the Big Ten Conference Championship those years as well. "We are thrilled to welcome Ted Patton to Wisconsin," said Badger head coach Jack Brown. "Ted brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to build and sustain elite team culture. During his time at Indiana, he had a tremendous impact not just on performance, but on people—his ability to build meaningful relationships with athletes while challenging them to reach their full potential is second to none.
