Known as “Prime Time” during his Hall of Fame playing career, Deion Sanders has since transitioned into “Coach Prime,” and was named the 28th full-time head football coach at the University of Colorado on Dec. 3, 2022. Entering his fourth season, Coach Prime orchestrated one of the quickest turnarounds in college football, taking over an 1-11 team in 2022, improving to 4-8 in his first season in 2023 and then leading the Buffs to a 9-4 record in 2024, including a 7-2 record in Big 12 play, tying for first place in the league standings and within a game of the Big 12 Championship game and shot at the College Football Playoffs. Colorado finished the 2025 season with a 3-9 record. Coach Prime’s arrival on campus immediately came with the Buffs being placed into the center of the college football world, and arguably the center of the sports world in September of his first season. Despite finishing 4-8 in his first season, Colorado was the most watched team in the nation until the final week of the regular season. CU was on network television a CU record five times and had eight games on either network TV or the flagship ESPN. In year two of his tenure, CU shattered both of those records by appearing on network TV eight times, and for the first time appearing on each CBS and NBC and on the two partners with the Big 12, ABC and FOX, at least once throughout the season. Andre' Hart was named the linebackers coach by Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders on Dec. 12, 2022. Hart joins the Buffs from Jackson State, where he coached the linebackers for Coach Prime the last three seasons. Hart helped turn the Jackson State defense around in his first year then by the 2021 season, Jackson State had one of the best defenses in the nation and in 2022, it ranked first in six major defense categories in the FCS, including total defense (257.4), scoring defense (11.2), passing defense (129.5), pass efficiency defense (81.22), team sacks (3.92), and third down defense (25.3%). The year before Hart joined the Jackson State staff in 2019, its defense was ranked 80th nationally in total defense, 109th in scoring defense and 100th in rushing defense. Those numbers improved to 62nd (total defense), 52nd (scoring defense), and 59th (rushing defense) in the COVID-delayed 2020 season. By the 2021 season, Jackson State ranked second in total defense (257.4), fourth in scoring defense (14.8), third in passing defense (157.1) and 10th in rushing defense (100.3). Individually, LB Aubrey Miller was named the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 after leading the SWAC in 2021 with 109 tackles, which included 6.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. Brian Cabral, a Colorado Buffalo to the core, came out of retirement in May 2019 to become the school’s character coach. Brought back to the program by then-head coach Mel Tucker, new head coach Karl Dorrell maintained his presence on the staff. He works primarily with football, though he has worked with the basketball programs and is available to all 17 of CU’s varsity programs. Cabral, 66, was inducted into CU’s Athletic Hall of Fame in its 2018 class, as he spent 24 years on the sidelines as an assistant coach (1989 through 2012) – the last 23 full-time in assorted capacities including interim head coach, associate head coach, assistant head coach and defensive run game coordinator. Those 23 years as a full-time assistant rank as the most in CU history, not only for football but for all sports, as he passed the previous record holders (two legendary “Franks,” Potts and Prentup, both of whom assisted Buff head football coaches for 18 seasons). From 2013-16, he was the defensive coordinator at Indiana State University, where he also coached the inside linebackers. Curtis Snyder has been a part of the CU Athletic Department for all but five years since 1994 and he currently serves as the Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Communications since November 2023 after serving in the interim role as the head of the department starting in January 2023. In 2025, he added responsibilities as the sport supervisor for CU's 21-time national championship ski program. Previously at CU, he has served as the Assistant Athletic Director in the Sports Information office from 2018-22, the Director of Digital Strategy from 2016-18, Director of Digital Marketing from 2015-16, Digital Marketing Director/Associate Sports Information Director from 2012-15, the Associate Sports Information Director from 2008-12, an Assistant Sports Information Director from 1998-2003, adding Internet Managing Editor to that title in 1999, and first as a Student Assistant SID from 1994-98. He currently oversees the communications efforts for the entire athletic department and works specifically with the football, skiing and women's tennis teams. Herman Shelton, appointed Associate Director of Athletic Communication at the University of Colorado in July 2023, brings over 13 years of experience in sports media and communications. He is the primary media contact for CU's Cross Country and Track & Field programs and a secondary contact for Football, overseeing communications, social content, and highlighting the achievements of student-athletes. Herman's career began in 2010 at Texas Southern University, and he has since held key roles at Howard, Southern, and Alcorn State Universities. At Alcorn State, he partnered with ESPN to produce events like the SWAC Football Championship and contributed to high-profile tournaments. At Howard, he boosted visibility for the golf program and basketball star Makur Maker, even serving as the voice of the Howard Bison in 2021-22. He also contributed his services at the Allstate Sugar Bowl for three seasons and the 2017 Texas Bowl, which was relocated to New Orleans due to Hurricane Harvey. Born in Panama and raised in New Orleans, Herman holds degrees from Texas Southern and West Virginia University. He resides near Denver with his son, Keon. His professional affiliations include Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., College Sports Communicators (CSC), and the National Football Foundation.

Jason Phillips joined the Colorado staff prior to the 2024 season as wide receivers coach. Since arriving in Boulder, Phillips has overseen one of the most productive receiving units in program history. In 2024, he coached Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, who finished the season with 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 receiving touchdowns, setting a new Colorado record for touchdown receptions while ranking second in receptions and third in receiving yards in single-season history. Hunter recorded a program-record eight 100-yard receiving games, including four consecutive to open the season, and led the Buffaloes with 96 points scored. His 16 total touchdowns rank tied for eighth in school history. Phillips also coached Jimmy Horn Jr., who started 11 games and totaled 37 receptions for 441 yards and a touchdown despite missing time late in the season due to injury, and LaJohntay Wester, who recorded 74 receptions for 931 yards and 10 touchdowns. Wester’s production ranked among the top single-season marks in program history, finishing seventh in receptions, 12th in receiving yards and fourth in receiving touchdowns. He also added a 76-yard punt return touchdown against Utah and averaged 12.2 yards per punt return. Hunter, Horn Jr. and Wester were all selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. Johnnie Mack was named running backs coach at Colorado in February 2026 after serving as an offensive analyst working with the running backs during the 2025 season. He was elevated to the on-field role after Marshall Faulk accepted the head coaching position at Southern. Prior to Colorado, Mack returned to his hometown of Lakeland, Fla., and joined the coaching staff at Southeastern University ahead of the 2020 season. He arrived at SEU with experience across multiple offensive roles, special teams, and strength and conditioning, along with recruiting ties in Florida, Texas, California and Oklahoma. Before SEU, Mack worked at Hawai‘i in an offensive quality control role and coached wide receivers, helping mentor a pair of All-Mountain West selections in Cedric Byrd and JoJo Ward. During that stretch, Hawai‘i produced the first trio of 1,000-yard receivers in program history and won the Hawai‘i Bowl as West Division champions while ranking among the national leaders in passing and total offense. Mack also coached at Houston Baptist as offensive quality control coordinator and running backs coach, helping the Huskies average nearly 400 yards per game. He spent a season at North Texas coaching inside receivers and return specialists, helping the Mean Green win the Conference USA West Division and earn a berth in the New Orleans Bowl. Josh Niblett was named tight ends coach at Colorado in January 2026. Niblett joined the Buffaloes after a highly successful 26-year head coaching career at the high school level, most recently serving four seasons at Gainesville (Ga.) High School. He guided the Red Elephants to a 45-9 record, including appearances in the Class 5A state championship game in 2022 and 2025. Prior to Gainesville, Niblett spent 14 seasons as head coach at Hoover (Ala.) High School, compiling a 171-26 record and winning six state championships. He also led Hoover to multiple additional state championship appearances, cementing the program as one of the premier high school football powers in the nation. Before his tenure at Hoover, Niblett served as head coach at Oneonta (Ala.) High School, where he built the program into a state champion, culminating with a 3A state title in 2004. He also coached at Oxford (Ala.) High School for three seasons. Across four head coaching stops, Niblett compiled a career record of 281-67 and became the only coach in Alabama state history to win seven state championships. Maileka Slayton is in her first year on the University of Colorado staff as the assistant director for on-campus recruiting, as she joined the department on May 24, 2022. Slayton, 27, came to Colorado from Samford University in Homewood, Ala., where she was the donor relations coordinator from February 2021 until she left for CU. Included among her many duties were donor recognition, stewardship and acknowledgment; planning and executing donor hospitality events at home football and basketball games and Samford’s annual Hall of Fame celebration and golf tournament; and managing a team of 20 student workers and Samford ambassadors. She previous had worked as an events and hospitality intern for the Reese’s Senior Bowl (January 2019-January 2020), where she was responsible for registered over 200 members of the media and NFL scouts along with game day administration and management. Slayton also worked as a recruiting assistant for the Auburn University football team (2018 season) and as an operations intern for Kennesaw State University for the 2017 season. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from Kennesaw State in December 2017. A four-year letterwinner on the Owls track team, she earned multiple All-Atlantic Sun (ASUN) Conference honors in sprints and relays across four events and was a USTFCCCA second-team All-American in the 4x100 relay as a freshman. Pringle returned to Colorado as an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications in August 2018. He serves the primary contact for the Buffaloes' soccer and lacrosse teams. He is also a secondary contact for Colorado Football. Pringle has also been the women's basketball contact in his time at CU. Prior to Colorado, Pringle spent five years at the University of Idaho. He was in charge of volleyball, men's and women's tennis and women's basketball. At Idaho, he coordinated two NCAA Tournament runs for the Vandals' women's basketball team. He was also the press coordinator for the 2018 NCAA Women's Basketball Regional in Spokane, Wash., and assisted in communications for Idaho's 2016 Potato Bowl victory. Pringle previously worked in the CU SID office as a student. He graduated from Colorado in 2009 and began working with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He has also spent time at the University of Denver and the Western Athletic Conference, before heading to Idaho in 2013. Pringle, a native of Englewood, Colo., and attended Cherry Creek High School. He now resides in Broomfield, Colo., with his dog Iggy.
