Head Coach
Tanya Warren finished her 18th season as the head coach of the UNI Panther women’s basketball team in the 2024-25 season. Warren is a three-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year and guided the Panthers to league regular season titles in 2011 and 2016. She was the first black female head coach in UNI history and the first black female head coach in Missouri Valley Conference basketball history. Warren, the dean of MVC women’s basketball coaches, enters year 19 with a record of 339-244, ranking her both UNI’s and the MVC’s all-time winningest coach. Under her direction, the Panthers have appeared in postseason play in 14 of the last 15 full seasons (excluding 2019-20 because of COVID restrictions) including back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths in 2010 and 2011. She led the Panthers to all of the program’s first nine postseason victories including a run to the 2021 Women’s National Invitation Tournament semifinals. With Warren leading the way, the Panthers have also won two MVC tournament championships (2010, 2011). The 2024-25 season saw the biggest win in program history, the Panthers' first top-10 victory after an 87-75 win over no. 8 Iowa State inside the McLeod Center. the season also held a pair of team records set including total points and field goals made while the Panthers had the second-highest scoring average and third-most steals. Assistant Coach
Amellia Bromenschenkel joined UNI ahead of the 2025-26 season following a historic playing career at Purdue Fort Wayne, where she appeared in a program-record 147 games and etched her name throughout the record book. She concluded her career ranked in the top-10 in school history in points (1,536), rebounds (516), made field goals (568), three-pointers (173), steals (183), and blocks (80). A three-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection and seven-time Horizon League Academic Honor Roll member, Bromenschenkel combined high-level performance with academic excellence. She was named to the All-Horizon League teams three times - First Team in 2023-24, Second Team in 2024-25, and Third Team in 2022-23 - and was a key contributor in multiple postseason runs, including standout performances in the WNIT. In her final season, she started all 36 games and earned All-Horizon League Second Team and All-Tournament honors. Bromenschenkel averaged 11.4 points per game, scoring in double figures 27 times. She was especially effective late in the season, averaging 15.9 points over the final seven games, including 25 points against Butler in the WNIT Super 16 and 23 against Cleveland State in the Horizon League Championship semifinal. Associate Head Coach
Brad Nelson finished his 25th season with the Panthers after the 2024-25 season. He was named Associate Head Coach in June 2016 and works primarily with the Panther offense and also assists with scouting, recruiting, and all facets of practice. Last season, The Panthers set a UNI record with 2,519 points and 934 field goals made in 34 games. The Panthers went 17-17 on the season and 11-9 in conference play including the program's first victory over a top-10 opponent with an 87-75 victory against no. 8 Iowa State inside the McLeod Center. The Panthers accepted their first invitation to the Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament and competed in Gainesville, Florida in the first round of the 2025 WBIT. In the 2023-24 season, the UNI offense recorded the second-highest single-season point total (at the time) in UNI history with 2,349 points over its 32 games. UNI went 16-16 on the season with the fourth-toughest NET non-conference strength of schedule and 14-6 in MVC play. The Panthers fell in an overtime matchup in the semifinals of Hoops in the Heartland but participated in their ninth straight postseason with a WNIT bid. In the 2022-23 season, UNI had their first back-to-back 20+ win seasons since 2015-2017. UNI went 23-10 in 2022-23 while making it to the semifinal round of the MVC Championship Tournament Hoops in the Heartland. Assistant Coach
Former Panther guard Katelin Vandevender (Oney) completed her fourth season with the Panthers as an assistant coach after the 2024-25 season. Vandevender, a native of Cedar Rapids, was a member of two NCAA Tournament teams and started 33 games and averaged 9.7 points per game in 2010-11. In her senior season, she led UNI in scoring with 465 points and helped the Panthers reach the 2012 WBI championship game. Vandevender came to UNI from Cleveland State where she was an assistant coach for three seasons. With her assistance, the Vikings went 14-9 in 2020-21 and won the WBI title. In 2019-20, Cleveland State went 21-11 and advanced to the Horizon League semifinals. It was just the third 20-win season in program history. Before her time in Ohio, she was an assistant for two years at North Dakota. She helped lead UND to a 20-win season and a Big Sky regular season title in 2016-17. In 2018, Vandevender was tabbed as a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 honoree. The award, which recognizes top young coaching talent, honors those that have exemplified their involvement in community service, mentorship, professional manner, and professional association involvement.
